The Ladin language

To this day, the people of Val Gardena, Val Badia and Val di Fassa still predominantly speak their original language called Ladin. The roots of this ancient language go back to the Roman times over 2000 years ago. During this time, the Alpine mountain pastures were taken over by the Roman Empire, and subsequently the Latin vernacular of the Roman legoneers merged with the Rhaetian dialect, spoken by the local population. Today, Ladin is a mandatory school subject. There are several publications, radio and TV channels only in this dialect.

Wood carving tradition

Val Gardena is the "World's Capital" of wood carving. There is proven evidence, that even back in the 16th century, artistic craftsmen involved a large number of the valley's inhabitants. The production and trade of hand-crafted wooden figures became the most important economic activity and export product of the valley. Val Gardena is famous for its artistic handcrafted wood carvings and sculpturesIn the ADLER Art Gallery, on the way to the Vital Residenz, you can learn about the history of this wood-carving tradition.

Val Gardena's folkloric costumes

The elegance and beauty of Val Gardena's traditional costumes can be explained by the fact that in earlier times, Val Gardena's tradesmen travelled over the world, learning about new material such as silk, tapes, laces and jewels. Today, Val Gardena's traditional costumes count among one of the most precious and valuable costumes in the entire Alpine region, and are still worn for religious processions.

The Dolomites

The Dolomites date back to over 230 million years ago, where they first began as a coral reef deep in the sea. The continents' plates gradually shifted and pushed this spectacular mountain formation together, which emerged from the sea about 20 million years ago and now towers up high in the sky at 3,000 above sea level. When the sun sets, strange rock and cliff formations appear red, which explains why these mountain peaks were an inspiration for many legends and stories. Today, the Dolomites are best known and loved as an endless hiking and skiing paradise.
Since June 2009 the Dolomites are declared by the UNESCO as World Heritage.

Alpe di Siusi

The Alpe di Siusi, the largest high mountain pasture in Europe, lies directly north of Ortisei. At 1800 to 2200 metres above sea level, this meadow stretches over 50 km². In the summer, you can hike and enjoy the colourful mountain pastures and in the winter, it turns into a cross-country and family ski paradise. You can reach the Alpe di Siusi from Hotel ADLER in 8 minutes via the modern mountain cable cars.
